   2006 - Day 1
Our Chairman and President of Tynwald, Noel Cringle, formally declared the 2006 festival open at 9 a.m. in the Royal Hall yesterday.
The morning classes featured young Brass instrumentalists as soloists, in quartets and in ensembles. The highlight was an Honours marking of 90 to Charlotte Chambers for her solo performance of Rusalka's "Song to the Moon".
In the afternoon two multi-Cleveland Medal winners, Barbara Gale and Allan Wilcocks showed their versatility by taking first and second respectively, Allan sharing second with Arie Eisinger, in the Popular Standard Song pre 1980 class.
The evening was notable for the atmosphere created by the under 19s in their Songs from the Musicals Class, cheers and whistles making it more like a pop concert than a competition, much to the adjudicators approval. Olivia O'Shea won with a convincing performance of "Popular", Hannah Craine taking second place and Matthew Gallagher-McBrier doing it for the lads, taking third place with "On the Street Where You Live", the song that launched Placido Domingo onto his operatic career.
The Promenade Suite was the venue for the junior piano and brass instrumental classes which saw a number of Honours marks awarded with Chloe Harrison and John Wood both gaining 92s.
The results of all the classes throughout the day can be viewed in the results section under 2006.
